Shrigley Toliet Block update (Sept 09)

BCR can provide an update on the proposed conversion of the 1930s former toilet block at the junction of Shrigley Road and Ingersley Road in Bollington.

The building has been disused since 2003 and has fallen into disrepair. It was acquired by Bollington Initiative Trust for the community in 2008 and the Bollington Carbon Revolution Group have recently been asked to take on the renovation project.

The toilet block will be renovated to showcase eco-friendly building methods. It will contain examples of the latest building and decorating materials, gadgets and gizmos to help make our homes more environmentally friendly. Our hope is that the building will inspire the community to lower their carbon footprint.

Full planning permission has been granted to rescue the building from further decline and put it to a positive use. It is planned to restore the former toilet block, preserving its mock Tudor character. The previous masonry compartments will be removed to create a glass frontage within the existing wooden frame.

Plans are to use the building initially as an office/meeting base which may be used by local community groups. In addition the building will serve as an information point to share the activities of the BCR with the community. Ultimately it is hoped that the building will be open to the public on designated days (potentially monthly) to give advice and information for eco-refurbishment and to demonstrate the simple measures that we can take to green our homes and lifestyles. In line with the ethos of the building, driving to the building will be strongly discouraged and walking, cycling and taking public transport to visit the toilet block will be actively encouraged.

We are currently sourcing funding and hope to have this in place to start building work early in 2010. If you have any queries or concerns please feel free to contact us via our website.
